Poems
cows just stare
& sometimes lumber away
otters, on the other hand
have a lot of fun-Bernadette Mayer
cows
find the palm
with the right nutdisplace
or interrupt itwe didn’t grow those
in ArkansasI had a friend once
who knew how to tipwe drank Maddog
in the moonlighttripped with a flashlight
just
up a dark mount
not only
the right wordbut the proper balance
one word plusslam the brakes
my teeth hurtyou put too much
stare
sauce in the punch
when I was younger
I had no senseof how long
was too longin college I got a rise
in the shower—guysoften duplicated
my effortsnow I’m an ass
&
for staring at one
once I wrote
and wrotelittle shards
of grasspoked themselves
out of dirtgrew into glimmering
sometimes
fields of weeds
steam lingers
above the bathroom mirrorI notice the ceiling
a crack I never knew existedI can see only parts of myself
in the mirrorI watch some hairs fade to white
a very cinematic momentlike when the child’s blue balloon
floats over the parkit floats over Macy’s toward the Metreon
lumber
where I saw Darth Vader last night
this cornerstone was
donated to the town
by Alonzo Cross
before I was bornhe was my
away
great-grandfather
and he ran
this lumberyard
some twelve years ago
I went to Montrealit seemed everyone there
spoke FrenchI went with a Francophone
with whom I was enamoredand from whom I learned
otters
the luxurious mystery of translation
of which
I don’t
know muchexcept for you
on
and your pretty eyes
in the hot tub
time sort of
shuffles its deckI walk between
bookstoreseat ice cream
drink coffeewalk more
read poemswrite one
that makesmore or
the
less sense
I fall asleep
on the leather couchlistening to my
favorite songin my dream
I look upat the sky
other
through the jasmine
it’s interesting how
one word is
what it meansuntil you
change
one letterthen it becomes
something so
differentthis could be
metaphor
take people for exampleI don’t really mean
I am so very different
from youwe all have
hand
our names
to differentiate us
I remember
we eachmeasured our
handsone against
the otherpalm to palm
all of usbut I don’t
have
remember why
I’m beaming
today is gorgeousI just ran a mile
and then I went for a long walkbought a couple new books
had a spicy chicken saladlistened to some music
rescheduled a few meetingshopped on a bus and realized
a
how beautiful today is
singularity
depth perceptionmy calendar is
in my backpackit is 6:45 p.m.
I write one poem per pagewhich means
lot
I have more free time
some people have
cheeks that
bounce when they walkthis can be cute
I wonder if my cheeks
bounce when I walksome people have
of
checks that
word
associationin my heart
I have a giftwarmer than
blackberry cobblerfresh from
yesterday’s ovenI am so
fun
full of heart
this weekend
I had
a lot of funpresently
I am also
enjoying myselfthis weekend
I will have
so much fun
