Doughnut Sonnet No. 45

I stand before the snack machine in awe
While contemplating somberly between
A sleeve of powdered doughnuts and a bear claw,
Noting all the while how strangely clean
The window is.  So clean, in fact, I see
Some greenish sprinkles in the doughnut sleeve.
And then I move my eyes reluctantly
Down to the frosted bear claw.  I believe
There’s something greenish on the bear claw, too,
And when the vendor enters, box in tow,
I ask why everything’s a greenish hue
As he bends down to stock the cruller row.
“We’re using overstock from last year,” he
Said as I took a bite from my green pastry.
