Aviary Sonnet
                                  for Ellen Redbird

snowmelt petal or           pigeon wing                       furls a black thread           which held the crane—           arch in sitting window                                   red hair thick or                                   a lighter crest                        under the brim needlepoint                        maple leans a double knot           pocket of pills                        by chilled muddy basin never washes out of tied up fabric slope                                                 for tigers                                    never drown
