of flowers catches a mockingbird

as Eve coils her fingers around
an apple, carves him a day
from remnants of a whole cloth

that she carefully hides in the loneliest
place she can find; afraid of the blankness
of imagination she nervously wakes

her children to see a yellow-orange sun
wading in a sea of red and green;
she thinks about the clarity of rain

as Adam rests his head in her lap,
feels indebted to morning and the hiss
of light that shines from the land of Nod.
